If you are anything like me, you know damn well you should be dry firing more often to increase your skills in between range sessions.

The problem? That shit is super boring to me.

I get it, I am being dramatic. But that’s just how it goes, I want my practice to feel as real as possible. If I have to manually run the bolt to feel the trigger reset, then I’m just not interested. Conversely just pressing a dead trigger doesn’t do it for me either.

A while ago the kind folks at Mantis sent me over some of their products for testing. The one that really caught my attention was the Mantis Blackbeard. It’s a trigger reset system for AR15s. The kit comes with a “bolt” and a “magazine”. You remove your charging handle and bolt, insert the Blackbeard and then insert the “magazine” that Mantis provides. The magazine is essentially a battery that drives the system.

The kit is a bright red color so it’s very obvious when it’s installed for practice which I also appreciate.

Some cool things to note about the Blackbeard is that you have the exact same trigger feel including the break, weight and reset.

There are zero modifications to your rifle.

The kit can handle up to 10 shots a second.

You get 50,000 shots per charge.

What’s more is that the “bolt” has an adjustable laser on the end so each time you press the trigger you get a quick laser from the barrel. With the laser you can purchase smart or printable targets to use as an aiming guide which just makes your dry fire practice all that more valuable.

Mantis also has a Laser Academy App that allows you to set up the targets and use your cell phone to see the targets, the app then records your hits, gives you metrics and also has some gamification.

For the laser you can choose red, green, IR, or none at all.

I personally use the Blackbeard in my American Defense Manufacturing UIC Mod 2 because that is one of my main rifles that I train with.

If you are looking for the one of the best dry fire solution for your AR-15 you’ll be hard pressed to find anything better than the Mantis Blackbeard for the cost. The kit runs between 199.00 and 250.00 bucks.

All-in-all the Mantis Blackbeard system gets a thumbs up from me as a fun and worthwhile dry fire aid. Check them out for yourself and see how you can improve in between your range sessions.
